LDA Meeting

Happy Thursday!

At yesterday's meeting we were shown around the LDA student project space by Devin. It was a super interesting way to see how other disciplines are looking at environmental sustainability in their fields. From rain gardens and swales, to a table with its own self-sustaining succulent garden, the projects showcase the students' considerations for the environment. Perhaps the most exciting of all was a project that Devin and a grad student have been working on for the past several years, the bokashi compost system. It is a method that was developed in Japan to compost food waste in a more attractive and rapid way through the fermentation of the waste. After weeks in a bokashi bucket, the waste is dug underground, therefore hiding its unpleasant facade and smell, a common complaint about traditional composting. So far they have about all of Hunt Hall composting their food waste in this fashion, and plan to expand the project.

Hope to see you next week!
