Post Undergraduate Q&A

1) What resources on campus will help me apply to a grad school with a food focus?

To apply to UC Davis Grad programs follow this link:

Otherwise talk to an advisor.

2) What are some more specific grad (ag) majors?

Check out this site for an exhaustive list:

3) Where would I apply for dietetics internships? Schools, hospitals?

If a master’s degree is a goal, dietetic internships are generally set up through the educational program one attends. Most programs will rotate students through hospitals, the community and private practices so students get exposure to all areas. Some of the top California universities are Long Beach State and San Francisco State. CalState LA also has a neat program.

Applying to an internship without a master’s program is done through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. According to the Academy, Appointments to DIs are awarded on a competitive basis and most use a national computer matching process. Programs not participating in computer matching accept applications only from individuals employed by the sponsoring organization. Prospective applicants must contact program directors for current information, including application deadline dates. More information about the application, tuition and financial aid can be obtained from the program.

Because internships are competitive, one should consider applying to an array of internships which cover interested areas of dietetics just in case there are not opportunities in your first choice area.

4) I don’t want to go to grad school, what are my other options?

You could earn a certifications from a university or community college, find grants to support food systems research abroad, or undertake on an educational program that doesn’t involve attending “school” or being on a “campus”.

5) Are there grad students on UCD campus involved with SA&FS as a topic? How are they getting paid/supported?

A Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) is a graduate student who performs research related to the student's degree program in an academic department or research unit under the direction of a faculty member or authorized principal investigator.

GSRs are paid according to a compensation plan developed by the student's graduate program (either department-based or group-based). The compensation plan is designed to give graduate programs the flexibility needed to compete for recruitment of the best students. Compensation plans are filed with the appropriate Dean's office, with a copy to the Office of Graduate Studies. If a program does not have a compensation plan, the stipend should be based upon the default compensation plan for the University. See Dean's Directive 02-098 for details:
